Teaching EAP (English for Academic Purposes) in an EMI (English Medium Instruction) Context

Abstract

It has been argued that “as EMI continues to gain ground globally…the separate disciplines of Second Language Acquisition/Applied Linguistics on the one hand and “Subject Education” on the other hand need to come much closer together to create a positive synergy” (Macaro et al, 2016).

In this talk, we aim to give an insight into the situation of the EMI subject lecturer and the issues involved in delivering content through a second language, in this case, English. We will look at the arguments for moving away from a more traditional lecture style and towards a more interactive style of teaching. We will go on to look at how, in turn, this may affect the pedagogy of EAP teachers who are supporting the students in these EMI classes. Finally, we will offer some practical teaching suggestions for EAP teachers to help move towards the “positive synergy” mentioned above.
